FIBIS — Families in British India Society

Over two million names for the British in India, transcribed by volunteers, with a stated policy that the data be free to all comers; a small number of files are members-only. MUCH OF IT IS INDEXED FROM THE BRITISH LIBRARY'S INDIA OFFICE RECORDS, published with the IOR's permission — including the Index of Ecclesiastical returns for Bombay, Bengal and Madras marriages, baptisms and burials. That matters because the same IOR material is sold as paywalled transcripts elsewhere: verified 2026-10-09 by recovering a bride's name and marriage date, from two independent FIBIS indexes, for a 1846 Bombay marriage a family archive had been unable to read behind a paid trial. It also indexes Allen's Indian Mail, the Bombay Times, the Times of India and the Gentleman's Magazine announcements, which carry people home again — one officer's death in north Wales in 1862 is recorded there because the Anglo-Indian press reported it.
