Where to start in Moldova

None of the 2 checked sources here can be opened from a keyboard. 2are catalogue cards or paper in a building — a letter, not a click. On top of that, 9 worldwide services reach Moldova without a subscription.

Write to Agenția Națională a Arhivelor (Moldova), Arhivele Naționale ale României for what is not online. FamilySearch has 16 collections covering it, running 1226–2005, 32,188,833 indexed records. No jurisdiction region covers Moldova yet, so this atlas cannot say whose archive held this ground in a given year — and it will not guess.

146 places placed, 0 volumes walked. Not one of them has had its paper counted yet, so treat the shelf here as a list of somewhere to look rather than a list of what survives. Open Moldova on the map, or tell us what is missing.

The archives

  • Agenția Națională a Arhivelor (Moldova) catalogue Chișinău, Moldova

Moldova's National Archives Agency. OPENED 2026-09-29: it publishes ONLINE INVENTORIES — its own front page announces inventories for the Soviet period 1917–1940 — and a separate notice about restoring access to its digital collections, so images may exist beyond the finding aids; that part is not confirmed and the access class here describes the inventories, which are. Until today Moldova's only source was ROMANIA's national archive, correct for interwar Bessarabia and silent on Transnistria and the Soviet-era record.

  • Arhivele Naționale ale României catalogue Bucharest, Romania

The Romanian national archives, county by county. Holds the Bukovinan and Transylvanian registers for the years those provinces were Romanian, which is not the same span as the years they existed.

And 12 worldwide providers reach Moldova too — the full list.
