5 of the 7 checked sources here can be opened tonight. 3are free images with no account. 1 needs a free account. 1is an index with no images. 1is paid or part-paid. 1is a catalogue card or paper in a building — a letter, not a click. On top of that, 9 worldwide services reach Slovenia without a subscription.

1 more institution is listed here and has never been checked — nobody has opened it, written to it, or found out what it holds. They are on the map as grey because that is what they are, and the honest reading of this page is 5 known-open, 1 unknown.

Whose archive this ground was

Record regions mapped in Slovenia — which empire held the ground, and therefore which archive holds its paper.

The archives

  • ANNO — Austrian Newspapers Online free Vienna, Austria

The Austrian National Library's digitised newspaper run. Full-text searchable, and it covers the whole empire — which is why it finds Croatian and Istrian names.

  • Arhiv Republike Slovenije mixed Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana. The Slovenian state archive — the Habsburg land records for Carniola, the Franciscean cadastre, and the finding aids that SIRAnet searches. Its own arhiv.gov.si serves http only, so the entry here points at the state portal page, which does not.

  • dLib.si free Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Digital Library of Slovenia. Newspapers, journals and books, full-text searchable — and it reaches Istrian and Littoral material.

  • GenTeam.at Vienna, Austria

Volunteer indexes to the Habsburg lands — Vienna's parish registers, Jewish records, school and guild lists. Free with an account, and it reaches ground the church portals do not.

  • IstriaNet unsurveyed

A volunteer-built reference on Istria — history, bibliography and the AMSI series index. Worked by the Defranceski archive for the bibliography of Camillo De Franceschi's writings. A guide to where the scholarship is, not a register. Not yet surveyed.

  • Matricula Online free Passau, Germany

Diocesan parish registers photographed and served free, without an account. Austria and much of Germany and Poland; the Italian entries are South Tyrol.

  • Žrtve rata 1941–1945 — Muzej žrtava genocida index Belgrade, Serbia

The Museum of Genocide Victims in Belgrade's name-by-name register of people killed in Yugoslavia between 1941 and 1945 — 659,122 records, free and without an account. Searchable by given name, surname, year of birth, the MUNICIPALITY AND PLACE OF RESIDENCE ON 6 APRIL 1941, and by place, year and circumstances of death; each row also carries the parent's name, place of birth and nationality as recorded. That pre-war residence field is what makes it genealogical rather than commemorative: it places a named person in a named village on a fixed date, which is exactly what a register would give you and often the only thing that survives for these years. Counted as an INDEX — it gives structured records, not images of the documents behind them. Scope is the whole of the former Yugoslavia; the countries listed here are the ones seen in the data (Vukovar and Vinkovci, Zavidovići and Lopare, Sremska Mitrovica), so it will also answer for Montenegro and North Macedonia beyond what has been checked here. The interface is Serbian. Read from the site itself on 2026-09-29; access class confirmed by use, not assumed. HOW TO SEARCH IT WITHOUT READING A FAMILY AS ABSENT. The surname field matches EXACTLY, not as a substring: «Franceschi» returns 0 while «Defranceschi» returns 2, so a stem finds nothing and every prefixed form has to be sent as its own query. And the spellings are not interchangeable — they hold DIFFERENT PEOPLE. «Defranceschi» gives two men at Pula and Vodnjan; «Defrančeški» gives a third at Pazin and Gologorica, and neither query returns the other's records. Query the Italian, the Croatian and the diacritic-stripped forms separately and treat the results as additive. Verified by search on 2026-09-29. One more thing worth knowing: the front end races when queries are run back to back, and can paint one query's rows under another's count, so a count is only trustworthy taken one query per page load.

  • SIRAnet catalogue Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Slovenian regional archives' shared catalogue. Largely a finding aid — it tells you the book exists and where it is.

And 12 worldwide providers reach Slovenia too — the full list.

1 more collections, contributed

A directory David assembled, sorted by what kind of record each one is. Read this differently from the rest of the page. The descriptions are his, not an archive's catalogue, and nobody here has opened the volumes behind them. Every link was tried on 2026-09-20 and answered; the ones that did not are not listed.
