Kingdom of Bahrain
Who & why: Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa upgrades Bahrain from an emirate to a kingdom in February 2002, styling himself king as part of a wider constitutional reform package following a 2001 referendum. Bahrain becomes an early adopter of Gulf financial diversification, building a regional banking hub that lessens its dependence on its now-modest oil reserves, first tapped back in 1932.
What it represents: the same red-and-white serrated flag continues, its number of white serrations formally fixed at five in 2002 to symbolize the Five Pillars of Islam — ending decades of inconsistent serration counts on earlier prints.
Both sources give 2002, the year this page starts the current flag. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 14 February 2002; Flags of the World dates it 14 Feb 2002.

Not established: Only the year the current flag was adopted was compared; the design and the swatch colours were not checked against a specification.
