Record Atlas
152 countries measured · 1907 places walked, 1978 districts drawn · 4% of collections reach a named place

What this map does not know

Every other page here says what is present. This one measures what is missing, country by country, because a map that only advertises its coverage is quietly claiming the rest.

The honest numbers
  • 94.9% of the ground on this map has never been surveyed. 2,057 of 40,266 dots carry an access class somebody established; the rest are correctly placed and unread. Every other figure on this page is a refinement of that one.
  • 332 of 552 sources in the directory have never been opened — they are listed because a register or an open dataset named them. 232 have been triaged since: alive or dead, a page or an application, open or refusing robots. A queue somebody can work is not the same as a source somebody has read.
  • 46 of 152 countries have a single place walked — that is, somebody went through a catalogue and wrote down what stands there. 101 have a dot of some kind; the difference, 55 countries, is ground that is correctly placed and completely unread.
  • 1,978 of the 40,266 dots are administrative divisions rather than walked places. They are the units records are filed in. They, and every other dot with no volume recorded on it, are drawn hollow for exactly this reason: a district that a catalogue merely reaches must not look like a parish somebody read.
  • 0 of 152 now have a named national source — the national archive or national library, from Wikidata. It was 38 until today: the other 199 answered with FamilySearch and Ancestry, which cover everywhere and therefore say nothing about anywhere. Nobody here has opened these; their links answered when asked, and that is all this map claims. 0 countries still have none.
  • 33 have a record region — which empire held the ground, and therefore whose archive holds the paper. That is the thing this map is for and it covers 22% of the countries it names.
  • 4% of collections reach a named place. The rest are country-level: real, searchable, and no substitute for knowing the parish.
  • 2,014 Australian newspapers are now catalogued, and they matter here because Australia has no parish-register series at all: civil registration is state by state and closed for a lifetime, so the newspaper is the record. Counting only registers would have called that continent empty. 558 of those titles name a town this atlas does not hold — Katoomba, Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie — and they are counted here rather than placed on a guess.
  • 245 pages of flag history now sit inside this atlas, covering 210 countries against the 41 record regions above. They say who governed; the regions say whose archive that means. The two are side by side and not yet one thing: the timelines are written into their pages as markup, so a search here cannot read them.
The continent this map is worst at

Africa reads as empty on the map and the reason is not that Africa has no records. It is that 50 of 3,504 FamilySearch collections — 1.4% — cover any African country at all, and no family archive imported here has walked African ground. 541 African places are drawn; 8 carry a single walked volume.

What does exist: 0 of 55 African countries have a named national archive or library on this map now. They are listed in the panel when you click a place, and the marker is drawn with a dotted rim to say so — because a plain grey dot said «there is nothing here» when what it meant was «nothing here has reached this map yet». 55 African countries still have neither.

The ground itself

Inside the 41 record regions, mapped by other people and drawn as such — nobody here has visited any of them. A church is a parish, and a parish is the unit a register is kept in, which makes it the most useful of these.

Settlements, findable but not drawn26,882GeoNames, CC BY

The settlements are searchable and deliberately invisible: tens of thousands of grey dots meaning «nobody has looked here» would bury the 1,907 that hold something. Type one and it still tells you which region it is in, and the region knows whose archive held that ground.

Ireland, measured against the Ordnance Survey

The townland layer comes from Townlands.ie, an OpenStreetMap project still in progress. Shipping it without this table would let a reader take a thin county for an empty one — which is the single confusion this page exists to prevent. The denominator is the Ordnance Survey's own historic townland count. A county over 100% is not a surplus: a townland split across two civil parishes is counted once per parish here, because the parish is what makes a townland an address.

Reach is the share of a country's collections catalogued under a town, county or province rather than under the country as a whole. A low figure is not a bad archive — it is a national index where a local one would serve better.

Why this page exists

Croatia has 1135 walked places and 6528 volumes because somebody walked a catalogue parish by parish over months. No other ground has had that done, and no amount of harvesting collection lists substitutes for it — breadth at country level is not depth at parish level, and this table is here so that the difference cannot be glossed over.
