Belize, independent
Who & why: Belize becomes fully independent of the United Kingdom on 21 September 1981, the last Central American nation to leave European rule — its independence delayed for decades in large part by Guatemala's territorial claim and Britain's need to guarantee Belizean security against it. The official flag is adopted the same day, adding two red stripes to the existing blue-and-white design as a bipartisan gesture (the ruling PUP's blue and white paired with the opposition UDP's red).
What it represents: a blue field bordered top and bottom by red stripes, with a white disc at center holding Belize's coat of arms — mahogany tree, tools of the logging trade, and the motto "Sub Umbra Floreo" ("Under the Shade I Flourish"), simplified here as a laurel ring and shield.
Wikipedia: adopted 21 September 1981, independence day (standardised 28 August 2019): a royal blue field with red stripes at top and bottom and a white disc holding the 1907 coat of arms, which recalls the logging industry with tools and mahogany trees, with the motto Sub Umbra Floreo and 50 leaves recalling 1950. FOTW: adopted 21 September 1981; blue field with red stripes added in 1981, a white disc with 50 olive leaves and the coat of arms (oar, sledgehammer, saw, axe, ship, tree), the motto glossed 'I flourish in the shadow'; standardised in 2019 at 3:5.

Not established: The sources agree on date and design. They differ on the leaves (Wikipedia: for 1950 and the PUP; FOTW: the year 1950) and FOTW does not call the tree a mahogany; the page's 'laurel ring' simplifies the 50-leaf wreath.
