Republic of Niger (independent)
Who & why: Niger becomes independent on 3 August 1960 under President Hamani Diori. Since then it has experienced repeated political instability — multiple military coups (including in 1974, 1996, 1999, 2010, and most recently 2023) interspersed with periods of civilian, multiparty rule — alongside recurring Tuareg rebellions in the north. Through all of it, the flag adopted before independence has never changed.
What it represents: a horizontal orange-white-green tricolor adopted 23 November 1959: orange for the Sahara desert of the north, green for the fertile Niger River valley and savanna of the south, white for purity and the Niger River itself, and a central orange disc for the sun.
Both sources date the current flag to 1959, before this era begins in 1960, so the flag was already in use at the start. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 23 November 1959; Flags of the World dates it 1959.
