United Arab Emirates (federation)
Who & why: as Britain withdraws from its remaining Gulf commitments, six of the Trucial States federate as the United Arab Emirates on 2 December 1971, with Ras al-Khaimah joining as the seventh emirate weeks later in February 1972. A Bedouin, pearling, and fishing economy transforms within a generation into one of the world's major oil-and-gas economies and a global trade and finance hub, centered on Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
What it represents: a new flag, designed by a 19-year-old, Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, in a nationwide competition held just before federation, uses pan-Arab colors — a vertical red band at the hoist against horizontal green, white, and black stripes — to represent the seven emirates as a single new whole rather than favor any one of their older individual banners.
Both sources give 1971, the year this page starts the current flag. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 2 December 1971; Flags of the World dates it December 1971.
