50-star flag
Who & why: Hawaii is admitted as the 50th state on 21 August 1959; per the Flag Act of 1818's standing rule that a new star takes effect the 4th of July following a state's admission, the 50-star flag becomes official on 4 July 1960 — now the longest-serving version of the flag in the nation's history by a wide margin.
What it represents: 50 stars in a staggered 9-row pattern, 13 alternating red-and-white stripes for the original colonies — the design most familiar today.
Both sources give 1960, the year this page starts the current flag. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 3 December 1775; Flags of the World dates it 4 July 1960.

Not established: Only the year the current flag was adopted was compared; the design and the swatch colours were not checked against a specification.
