Denmark
Jutland, Funen, Zealand, Bornholm, southern Jutland. Which empire held this ground in which years — and, the part that matters, which archive that means.
1864–1920 — Denmark lost Schleswig and Holstein in 1864, so a family from southern Jutland has German Prussian civil registration — Standesamt records from 1874 — for these years, not Danish ones, and the paper may be in Germany. North Schleswig voted itself back to Denmark in 1920; the records of the German period did not all follow.
Whose archive this ground was
| Years | Who held it | Whose archive that means |
|---|---|---|
| 1645–1814 | Denmark–Norway | Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch Parish registers were ordered in 1645 and most begin considerably later; what survives before 1700 is thin and local. They are at the Rigsarkivet and free to read as images on Arkivalieronline. |
| 1814–1864 | Denmark, after the loss of Norway | Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch From 1814 every parish keeps TWO registers, the minister's and the parish clerk's, held separately — so a fire or a gap in one is very often survivable in the other. This is the single most useful fact about Danish records and it is rarely mentioned. |
| 1864–1920 | Prussia, then the German Empire — in Schleswig only | Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch · Matricula Online THE TRAP. Denmark lost Schleswig and Holstein in 1864, so a family from southern Jutland has German Prussian civil registration — Standesamt records from 1874 — for these years, not Danish ones, and the paper may be in Germany. North Schleswig voted itself back to Denmark in 1920; the records of the German period did not all follow. |
| 1920–2026 | Denmark | Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch The censuses of 1787, 1801, 1834, 1840, 1845, 1850 and onwards are digitised and indexed, and they are the fastest way into a Danish family before the registers are readable. |
The rings are approximate — deliberately. They exist to shade which filing system a place fell under, not to adjudicate a border. A place near a ring's edge should be checked against both neighbours.

The map takes a range, and a range that crosses one of the rows above is where records get lost: the family never moved, and the archive on the far side of the handover will tell you it holds nothing.

Ranked with the regional ones first — a collection for a province is usually a better lead than a national index, though the national index is often where a name is actually written down. A free account opens the images.
