Where to start in Mexico

None of the 1 checked source here can be opened from a keyboard. 1is a catalogue card or paper in a building — a letter, not a click. On top of that, 9 worldwide services reach Mexico without a subscription.

1 more institution is listed here and has never been checked — nobody has opened it, written to it, or found out what it holds. They are on the map as grey because that is what they are, and the honest reading of this page is 0 known-open, 1 unknown.

Write to Archivo General de la Nación (México) for what is not online. FamilySearch has 69 collections covering it, running 1513–2022, 207,290,155 indexed records. No jurisdiction region covers Mexico yet, so this atlas cannot say whose archive held this ground in a given year — and it will not guess.

The archives

  • Archivo General de la Nación (México) unsurveyed Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico's national archive. Parish registers and civil registration sit with the dioceses and the states, so this is the top of the system rather than where a baptism is. Harvested and its address opened, nothing more: what it holds, what is online and what it costs to look are unchecked here.

  • Mi Registro Civil catalogue Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico's Plataforma Nacional del Registro Civil. OPENED 2026-09-29, AND IT IS NOT A GENEALOGICAL SOURCE — worth saying plainly, because its name promises one. It is a SERVICES portal: you pick one of the 32 entidades from a dropdown (Aguascalientes through Zacatecas, plus EXTRANJERO) and it shows the trámites that state offers — ordering a certified copy of a civil record, and checking the status of a request you already made. There is no historical search, no index to browse and no images. Mexican civil registration is administered per state, and this is the front door to thirty-two separate state offices rather than a national record set. Filed as `catalogue` because that is the nearest true class — the paper is not photographed and must be asked for — though even a catalogue is more than it offers.

And 12 worldwide providers reach Mexico too — the full list.

A directory David assembled, sorted by what kind of record each one is. Read this differently from the rest of the page. The descriptions are his, not an archive's catalogue, and nobody here has opened the volumes behind them. Every link was tried on 2026-09-20 and answered; the ones that did not are not listed.
