People's Republic / Republic of Angola (independent)
Who & why: Angola becomes independent on 11 November 1975 under the Marxist-aligned MPLA (Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola). Independence is followed immediately, not eventually, by a devastating civil war (1975–2002) between the MPLA government and UNITA and FNLA rebel movements, heavily shaped by Cold War-era Soviet/Cuban and American/South African involvement; roughly half a million people are estimated to have died before a 2002 ceasefire finally holds. The MPLA has governed continuously since independence, transitioning from one-party Marxist-Leninist rule to a nominally multiparty system in the early 1990s.
What it represents: black for Africa and the continent's peoples, red for the blood spilled in the liberation struggle; the gold emblem — a cog-wheel for industrial workers, a machete for agricultural workers, and a star for internationalism and progress — deliberately echoes the hammer-and-sickle iconography of the MPLA's socialist allies.
Both sources give 1975, the year this page starts the current flag. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 11 November 1975; Flags of the World dates it 11 November 1975.
