Sultanate of Brunei (full independence)
Who & why: Brunei gains full independence from Britain on 1 January 1984, the last of Britain's Southeast Asian territories to do so, under Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who has now reigned since 1967. Substantial oil and gas reserves fund one of the highest per-capita incomes in the region, and the sultan retains full executive power as one of the world's last true absolute monarchs, having formally implemented sharia-based criminal law from 2014 onward.
What it represents: the same flag adopted for self-government in 1959 continues unchanged into full sovereignty — yellow for the sultan, white and black diagonal bands for the chief minister and other senior officials, and the national crest in red at center.
Both sources date the current flag to 1959, before this era begins in 1984, so the flag was already in use at the start. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 29 September 1959; Flags of the World dates it September 1959.

Not established: Only the year the current flag was adopted was compared; the design and the swatch colours were not checked against a specification.
