State of Eritrea
Who & why: the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) takes Asmara in May 1991, ending the war and effectively securing independence; a UN-supervised referendum in April 1993 confirms it almost unanimously, and Eritrea is formally recognized as a sovereign state under President Isaias Afwerki, the EPLF's own leader. A further border war with Ethiopia from 1998-2000 costs tens of thousands of lives before a fragile peace, only fully normalized in 2018.
What it represents: the current flag, which Wikipedia says was first officially hoisted on 24 May 1993 and standardised on 5 December 1995, reworks the EPLF's own flag: a red triangle from the hoist, for the blood shed in the independence struggle, with a gold olive wreath in place of the EPLF's star, flanked by a green triangle (agriculture and livestock) above and a blue triangle (the sea) below. A remark on Flags of the World that the wreath echoes the United Nations emblem is hearsay; the sources read record no official meaning for the wreath.
Wikipedia: after independence the flag was modified and first hoisted officially on 24 May 1993, the gold olive wreath (14 leaves each side, from the 1952 flag) replacing the gold star of the EPLF flag in the red triangle; the wreath was standardised at 30 leaves and the ratio changed from 2:3 to 1:2 on 5 December 1995. FOTW: the flag has a red triangle at the hoist with a yellow wreath, green over blue in the fly; flag adopted 5 December 1995, coat of arms adopted 24 May 1993; the EPLF flag it derives from had a red triangle and a yellow star.

Not established: The page's date of 'adopted in 1995' is for the standard version; the 1993 version (2:3, 14 leaves) is documented by Wikipedia only. The UN-emblem reading of the wreath is a hearsay remark on FOTW, which says no official meaning is recorded; FOTW and Wikipedia agree green is agriculture, red the independence struggle, blue the sea.
