Restored Republic of Haiti
Who & why: Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier flees the country on 7 February 1986, ending the 29-year Duvalier dictatorship. Among the first acts of the new order is restoring the traditional blue-and-red flag in place of the black-and-red banner the regime had imposed. Haiti's politics remain turbulent in the decades since — coups, foreign interventions, the 2010 earthquake, gang violence in the 2020s — but the flag itself has not changed again.
What it represents: the restored vertical blue-and-red bicolor with the central coat of arms — a palm tree, cannons and cannonballs, a Phrygian cap, and the motto "L'Union Fait La Force" ("Union Makes Strength") — Haiti's flag today.
Both sources give 1986, the year this page starts the current flag. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 26 February 1986; Flags of the World dates it 25 February 1986.
