Republic of Kenya
Who & why: Kenya becomes independent on 12 December 1963 under Prime Minister Jomo Kenyatta, leader of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), and a republic within the year with Kenyatta as president. Independence follows the Lancaster House constitutional conferences of the early 1960s, themselves a direct response to the pressure the Mau Mau uprising had put on British colonial policy the decade before.
What it represents: black for the people, red for the blood shed in the struggle for independence, green for the land, separated by thin white fimbriation for peace — adapted directly from KANU's own party flag, with a red, white, and black Maasai shield and two crossed spears laid over the center representing the defense of freedom.
Both sources give 1963, the year this page starts the current flag. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 12 December 1963; Flags of the World dates it 12 December 1963.
