Independent Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis
Who & why: independence from Britain arrives on 19 September 1983 — the last former British Caribbean colony to become independent, and the smallest sovereign country in the Americas by both area and population. Anguilla, attached to the colony since 1882, is not part of the new federation: it broke away in the 1967 Anguillan Revolution and was formally separated as its own British dependency in 1980, three years before Saint Kitts and Nevis itself became independent without it.
What it represents: a diagonal band split green (upper hoist) and red (lower fly), divided by a yellow-bordered black diagonal band running from the lower hoist to the upper fly. Two white five-pointed stars on the black band stand for hope and liberty, one for each island.
Both sources give 1983, the year this page starts the current flag. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 19 September 1983; Flags of the World dates it 2003.
