Somali Democratic Republic → state collapse & federal republic
Who & why: General Mohamed Siad Barre seizes power in a 1969 coup and declares the Somali Democratic Republic, ruling as a socialist one-party dictatorship for two decades while pursuing (and losing, against Ethiopia in 1977-78) the pan-Somali dream the flag's own star alludes to. Barre's government collapses in January 1991 amid civil war and clan-based armed opposition, and Somalia has had no single fully effective central government since, cycling through transitional administrations, the breakaway (unrecognized) Somaliland republic in the north, and today's Federal Government of Somalia, established in 2012 and still working to extend real authority nationwide.
What it represents: the same 1954 flag continues in use throughout, regardless of who holds power — light blue for the sky, echoing the blue of the United Nations flag, and a white five-pointed star whose five points represent the five historically Somali-inhabited territories that pan-Somali nationalism hoped to one day unite: British and Italian Somaliland, French Somaliland (Djibouti), the Ogaden in Ethiopia, and Kenya's Northern Frontier District.
Both sources date the current flag to 1954, before this era begins in 1969, so the flag was already in use at the start. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 12 October 1954; Flags of the World dates it 12 Oct 1954.
