Republic of Tajikistan
Who & why: Tajikistan declared independence on 9 September 1991 as the USSR dissolved. Political and regional tensions escalated into open civil war by mid-1992, a conflict that continued until the June 1997 General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord formally ended it. Tajikistan remains the one Central Asian republic that is linguistically Persian and Iranian rather than Turkic, distinct from its four neighbors.
What it represents: red, white, and green horizontal bands with a gold crown beneath an arc of seven stars centered on the white band, adopted in 1992 and unchanged through and after the civil war.
Wikipedia: the national flag was adopted on 24 November 1992 (red, white, green in 2:3:2, yellow crown with an arc of seven stars; designer Zuhur Habibullaev), replacing the Tajik SSR flag. FOTW: adopted 24 November 1992 by law; white stripe 1.5 times the width of red and green; independence recognised 9 September 1991; before the new design the former Soviet colours were used without communist symbols (undated).
