Socialist Republic of Vietnam
Who & why: North Vietnamese forces take Saigon on 30 April 1975, ending the Vietnam War; a National Assembly formally reunifies the country as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on 2 July 1976, under Communist Party rule. Vietnam later normalizes relations with the United States (1995) and undertakes sweeping market reforms (đổi mới) while remaining a one-party state.
What it represents: the same gold-star-on-red flag flown by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam since 1945, now extended over the entire reunified country.
Both sources date the current flag to 1955, before this era begins in 1976, so the flag was already in use at the start. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as 23 November 1940; Flags of the World dates it Adopted 1955.

Not established: Only the year the current flag was adopted was compared; the design and the swatch colours were not checked against a specification.
