Republic of Zimbabwe (majority rule)
Who & why: following the December 1979 Lancaster House Agreement, internationally supervised elections bring Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF to power, and Zimbabwe becomes internationally recognized independent on 18 April 1980 under majority rule — ending nearly 90 years of settler-minority governance. Mugabe governs until a 2017 military-assisted resignation; the country continues under ZANU-PF rule today.
What it represents: the seven stripes (green-yellow-red-black-red-yellow-green) evoke the land, mineral wealth, liberation-war bloodshed, and the country's Black majority; the white triangle carries a red star for socialism/hope and the Zimbabwe Bird, a soapstone carving recovered from Great Zimbabwe's ruins, directly connecting the modern flag to the pre-colonial kingdom the country is named for.
Both sources give 1980, the year this page starts the current flag. Wikipedia's infobox gives the adoption as April 18th, 1980; Flags of the World dates it 18 April 1980.
