1720–1792 Kingdom of Sardinia - County of Nice Archives départementales des Alpes-Maritimes · Archives communales de Nice · FamilySearch · Geneanet

Savoy's states became the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1720, so these records belong to the Sardinian crown, not to Provence or France.

1792–1814 French occupation - department of Alpes-Maritimes Archives départementales des Alpes-Maritimes · Archives communales de Nice · FamilySearch · Geneanet

The French army entered Nice on 29 September 1792, and the department of Alpes-Maritimes was ordered on 31 January 1793 with boundaries different from today's; it included Monaco but not Grasse.

1860–1947 France - department of Alpes-Maritimes Archives départementales des Alpes-Maritimes · Archives communales de Nice · Archives municipales de Menton · FamilySearch · Geneanet

The Treaty of Turin was signed on 24 March 1860 and a referendum held on 15 and 16 April 1860. The department combined the former County of Nice with the Grasse arrondissement of Var.

1947–2026 France - Alpes-Maritimes with Tende and La Brigue Archives départementales des Alpes-Maritimes · Archives communales de Nice · FamilySearch · Geneanet

Tende, La Brigue and parts of the Vésubie and Tinée valley communes were attached in 1947 after the Treaty of Paris and a referendum; they had not been ceded in 1860.

The rings are approximate — deliberately. They exist to shade which filing system a place fell under, not to adjudicate a border. A place near a ring's edge should be checked against both neighbours.

The map takes a range, and a range that crosses one of the rows above is where records get lost: the family never moved, and the archive on the far side of the handover will tell you it holds nothing.
