Spellings of a name
One list of which spellings are the same name, and what each rests on. The family archives do not keep their own: this is the one every search starts from.
A spelling is only as good as what it rests on, so each form carries one of five claims, and says which. Case, spacing, hyphens and apostrophes are never counted as spellings: De Franceschi and Defranceschi are one form. An accent is, because a priest's Lereña is not a clerk's Lerena.
- The same family. One record, or the family's own tree, writes one person or family both ways.
- Met on this line's records. Met on a record of this family's line by the archive that read it.
- By a documented rule. Reached by a documented mechanical substitution. No record needed.
- Leads, never yet seen on a record. Plausible and never seen on a record. Search it; never write a data row on it alone.
- Decide each record on its own. Sometimes this family, sometimes another. Decide per record.

To look up one spelling, or a given name (every form of Ivan, Johann, Giovanni and John), use say your name.
Families are added from the archives' own records and from the atlas's sources, never from a guess. The computed spelling links on each surname page cover far more names and carry far less weight; a form that appears in both is shown here, with its evidence, and not twice.
