Kriegsarchiv — Österreichisches Staatsarchiv
The Kriegsarchiv (Vienna) holds Austro-Hungarian military records. For soldiers who died 1914-1918 the Kriegsarchiv's own research page names: the printed casualty lists (digital copies at the Upper Austrian State Library, and the 'Nachrichten über Verwundete und Kranke' in the Czech Digital Library; they cover wounded and prisoners as well as the dead, with surname, first name, rank, birth year, home municipality and unit); the Totenkartei card index of the First World War (incomplete; images listed on FamilySearch); digitised Kriegsmatriken death registers for hospitals in Vienna and Lower Austria and for regiments recruiting in Vienna, Lower Austria and the Pressburg/Bratislava area; a Hungarian National Archives war-dead database; and ten volumes of post-war Ehrenbücher covering nine provinces. There is no general index of the deceased, and the original casualty reports are no longer available in the reading room.
