- 1814–1864 Denmark, after the loss of Norway
- 1864–1920 Prussia, then the German Empire — in Schleswig only — THE TRAP. Denmark lost Schleswig and Holstein in 1864, so a family from southern Jutland has German Prussian civil registration — Standesamt records from 1874 — for these years, not Danish ones, and the paper may be in Germany. North Schleswig voted itself back to Denmark in 1920; the records of the German period did not all follow.
