Kingdom of Norway (restored)
Who & why: liberated from German occupation in May 1945, King Haakon VII returns from five years of exile in London to a hero's welcome. Norway becomes a founding NATO member in 1949, discovers North Sea oil in the late 1960s, and twice votes narrowly against joining the European Union (1972, 1994) while remaining in the European Economic Area.
What it represents: the same cross flag Norway has flown since 1821 (Meltzer's design, adopted by royal resolution of 13 July 1821, per Store norske leksikon) returns after the 1940-45 break shown in Wikipedia's chronology, and 8 May is kept as a flag day for the liberation of 1945; the sources read do not cover the claim that the exiled government and the resistance kept flying it throughout.
Wikipedia's chronology of the flag marks a break in 1940-45 and the cross flag as the flag again from 1945. Store norske leksikon (L. Roede): the national flag was drawn by Frederik Meltzer, adopted by royal resolution of 13 July 1821 and is Norway's flag today (navy-blue Nordic cross with white borders on red); 8 May is flag day for the liberation of 1945.
