Ballerup, Albertslund, Ishøj, Vallensbæk, Måløv. Which empire held this ground in which years — and, the part that matters, which archive that means.

Whose archive this ground was

YearsWho held itWhose archive that means
1536–1645 Denmark — Church of Denmark Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch

Parish ground west of the capital was Lutheran from 1536; some pastors kept registers before the royal order, the earliest noted being at Nakskov from 1572.

1645–1814 Denmark — parish registers ordered Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch

The royal order for parish registers was issued to the Bishop of Sjælland on 20 May 1645, and to the other bishoprics in 1646.

1814–1970 Denmark — duplicate registers Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch

From 1814 the second copy of each parish book was kept apart from the first, so a lost original may survive as a duplicate.

1970–2007 Copenhagen County Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch

Copenhagen County had its seat at Glostrup and took in the metropolitan municipalities other than Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, which had county status of their own.

2007–2026 Region Hovedstaden Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline

The counties were abolished on 1 January 2007 and replaced by five regions.

The rings are approximate — deliberately. They exist to shade which filing system a place fell under, not to adjudicate a border. A place near a ring's edge should be checked against both neighbours.

The map takes a range, and a range that crosses one of the rows above is where records get lost: the family never moved, and the archive on the far side of the handover will tell you it holds nothing.
