1200–1631 Marches of Ancona, Camerino and Fermo; Duchy of Urbino FamilySearch

Nominally Papal, but local lords (among them the Malatesta of Rimini and the Montefeltro of Urbino) and free communes held most of the land, and Ancona was a maritime republic in the 12th century. The Duchy of Urbino was dissolved in 1631.

Napoleon annexed the Marches (Urbino, Ancona, Macerata, Camerino) to the Kingdom of Italy on 2 April 1808. FamilySearch dates the Napoleonic civil registers of the former Papal States to 1810-1815; other summaries give 1810-1814.

Joachim Murat briefly occupied the region in 1815. Civil registration was dropped after the French and resumed with the Italian state in 1866, so these decades rest on parish registers.

The Marche was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy by plebiscite on 4 November 1860. Seven Montefeltro municipalities moved from the Province of Pesaro and Urbino to the Province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna, on 15 August 2009.

The rings are approximate — deliberately. They exist to shade which filing system a place fell under, not to adjudicate a border. A place near a ring's edge should be checked against both neighbours.

The map takes a range, and a range that crosses one of the rows above is where records get lost: the family never moved, and the archive on the far side of the handover will tell you it holds nothing.
