1536–1645 Denmark — Church of Denmark Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch

The Lutheran Church of Denmark dates from 1536. Some pastors began registers before the royal order.

1645–1814 Denmark — parish registers ordered Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch

Christian IV ordered a church book in every parish on 20 May 1645, first to the Bishop of Sjælland.

1814–1970 Denmark — duplicate registers Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch

A resolution of 1812 required two books per parish, kept in different buildings, which most parishes had adopted by 1814-15. From 1851 a couple could choose a civil marriage in some circumstances.

1970–2007 Frederiksborg County Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline · FamilySearch

The 1970 reform cut the counties from 24 to roughly 14. Frederiksborg County had its seat at Hillerød and 19 municipalities, among them Hillerød, Helsingør and Frederikssund.

2007–2026 Region Hovedstaden Rigsarkivet — Arkivalieronline

Frederiksborg County was abolished on 1 January 2007 and merged into the Capital Region.

The rings are approximate — deliberately. They exist to shade which filing system a place fell under, not to adjudicate a border. A place near a ring's edge should be checked against both neighbours.

The map takes a range, and a range that crosses one of the rows above is where records get lost: the family never moved, and the archive on the far side of the handover will tell you it holds nothing.
