Oklahoma - Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory
Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Tahlequah, Muskogee, Guthrie, Fort Gibson. Which empire held this ground in which years — and, the part that matters, which archive that means.
Whose archive this ground was
| Years | Who held it | Whose archive that means |
|---|---|---|
| 1762–1803 | Spanish Louisiana (France again from 1800) | no registers survive France ceded Louisiana to Spain in 1762, Spain returned it to France in 1800, and the United States bought it in 1803; Oklahoma is among the states the Purchase covered wholly or in part. |
| 1803–1834 | Louisiana Purchase lands - Missouri Territory | FamilySearch · National Archives Catalog (NARA) The ground was in Missouri Territory from 1812; the southern part of that territory became the Territory of Arkansaw in 1819, and the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819, finalised on ratification in 1821, moved the southwestern boundary. |
| 1834–1861 | Indian Territory - Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole nations | FamilySearch · National Archives Catalog (NARA) The Indian Removal Act of 1830 brought the Five Civilized Tribes, along with Plains and Great Lakes nations, to Indian Territory. Congress never organised it as a territory, and the nations governed themselves under treaties. |
| 1861–1865 | Confederate alliances with the Indian nations | National Archives Catalog (NARA) Confederate officers made treaties with the Five Civilized Tribes in June and July 1861, and Confederate forces took the US Army forts in the area. The Union recaptured the forts after Pea Ridge (March 1862) and essentially secured the territory after Honey Springs on 17 July 1863; the exact extent of Confederate-held ground is not fixed by the sources. |
| 1865–1890 | Indian Territory - Reconstruction treaties of 1866 | FamilySearch · National Archives Catalog (NARA) The Reconstruction treaties of 1866 required land concessions, emancipation of enslaved people and full tribal membership for freedmen. The Unassigned Lands were opened to settlement in the land run of 1889. |
| 1890–1907 | Oklahoma Territory (west) and Indian Territory (east) | FamilySearch · National Archives Catalog (NARA) The Organic Act of 2 May 1890 combined the western half of Indian Territory with No Man's Land as Oklahoma Territory, with Guthrie as capital; land runs followed in 1890, 1891 and 1893, and Greer County passed from Texas in 1896. In Indian Territory the Dawes Commission was authorised in 1893 and the Curtis Act of 1898 ordered a new roll; the Dawes final rolls closed in March 1907 and list citizens by blood, by marriage and Freedmen. |
| 1907–2026 | State of Oklahoma | FamilySearch · National Archives Catalog (NARA) · Chronicling America Oklahoma became a state on 16 November 1907 by joining the two territories. Statewide birth and death registration began in October 1908; the state vital-records office holds no death records from before 1908 and only limited delayed birth records, while the Oklahoma Historical Society holds some earlier birth and death material tied to land allotments and tribal records. |
The rings are approximate — deliberately. They exist to shade which filing system a place fell under, not to adjudicate a border. A place near a ring's edge should be checked against both neighbours.

The map takes a range, and a range that crosses one of the rows above is where records get lost: the family never moved, and the archive on the far side of the handover will tell you it holds nothing.
