Piedmont — Savoy, Turin and the Po plain
Torino, Cuneo, Asti, Alessandria, Novara, Vercelli, Biella, Domodossola. Which empire held this ground in which years — and, the part that matters, which archive that means.
Whose archive this ground was
| Years | Who held it | Whose archive that means |
|---|---|---|
| 1562–1713 | Duchy of Savoy — capital Turin | Archivio di Stato di Torino · FamilySearch The Dukes of Savoy moved their capital from Chambéry to Turin in 1562 (1563 in some accounts). Much of the east of today's Piedmont lay outside the duchy: half of Montferrat belonged to the Gonzaga of Mantua until 1708, and parts of the Duchy of Milan passed to Savoy under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. |
| 1713–1800 | Kingdom of Sardinia (Savoy-Piedmont) | Archivio di Stato di Torino · FamilySearch Savoy received Sicily in 1713 and exchanged it for Sardinia in 1720, after which the state was the Kingdom of Sardinia although its centre remained Turin. Novara and Tortona, with the Langhe, passed to Charles Emmanuel III in the peace that closed the War of the Polish Succession (1738). |
| 1800–1802 | Sub-Alpine Republic (French client state) | Archivio di Stato di Torino · FamilySearch The Sub-Alpine Republic was set up in June 1800 and came under full French control in 1801. |
| 1802–1814 | Annexed to France | Archivio di Stato di Torino · Archivio di Stato di Cuneo · FamilySearch France annexed Piedmont in September 1802. French-style civil-status registers for Piedmont are dated about 1802 or 1804 to 1814, and FamilySearch lists Turin State Archive civil registration for 1802-1816. |
| 1814–1861 | Kingdom of Sardinia — restored 1814; Genoa added 1815 | Archivio di Stato di Torino · Archivio di Stato di Cuneo · Archivio di Stato di Asti · Archivio di Stato di Alessandria · Archivio di Stato di Novara · Archivio di Stato di Vercelli · Antenati · FamilySearch The kingdom was restored after Napoleon and gained the Republic of Genoa at the Congress of Vienna. The Statuto Albertino constitution dates from 1847-48, and Savoy and Nice were ceded to France in 1860. Civil-status registers under the Sardinian system are generally dated from 1839; the Italian state registers start in 1866. |
| 1861–2026 | Kingdom, then Republic of Italy — Piedmont | Archivio di Stato di Torino · Archivio di Stato di Cuneo · Archivio di Stato di Asti · Archivio di Stato di Alessandria · Archivio di Stato di Novara · Archivio di Stato di Vercelli · Archivio di Stato di Biella · Archivio di Stato di Verbania · Antenati · FamilySearch The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed on 17 March 1861 with Turin as its first capital, which it remained until 1865. Italian civil registration began in 1866 for most of northern and central Italy. |
The rings are approximate — deliberately. They exist to shade which filing system a place fell under, not to adjudicate a border. A place near a ring's edge should be checked against both neighbours.

The map takes a range, and a range that crosses one of the rows above is where records get lost: the family never moved, and the archive on the far side of the handover will tell you it holds nothing.
